Barfi: Preview

Feel the cacophony that silence makes if you can fathom deep……..

Are you a die-hard fan of Ranbir Kapoor? He has been the crowd-puller and has also successfully impressed the carping critics with his brilliant acting prowess. The changa munda of Kapoor Khandan has his heart in his mouth with his upcoming flick Barfi, slated to release on 14th September, 2012. Anurag Basu quips that it as a masala film and it can’t be tagged as ‘hatke’, unlike the impression that the promos are offering.  After Basu’s ‘Kites’ prove to be a box office dud, Anurag did not give up his urge to dabble with different genres. He is not playing safe as the big banners often do by just changing the ingredients here and there while concocting syrupy college romances or love triangles. Basu is quick to mention that Barfi is a romantic and very much a commercial flick. This movie marks the debut of the sultry siren of South, Ileana D’Cruz in Bollywood.

Basu has spelt out that Ranbir who plays Murphy, a deaf and mute guy, has been his first choice, for Barfi.  Murphy who is lovingly called Barfi has the playfulness of a charmer. He is the brat who is capable of playing the most audacious pranks. At the same time he has the overwhelming power to melt hearts with his cool and sweet antics, and you can’t help but fall in love with him. In spite of his physical disabilities, he is the heart of the town and Barfi has Darjeeling as its backdrop.

Silence speaks loud in Barfi as the characters don’t sing but they celebrate life! It is about not giving up no matter how grave is the situation and to feel the pulse of life. Ranbir as Murphy got into the skin of the character and he soaked in some of the nuances of Charlie Chaplin. Whether Muprhy’s journey is about walking in the rain to hide the tears is to be found out soon!

Barfi is his journey, how he entangles himself with two other souls in the film, Shruti played by Illeana and Jhilmil(Priyanka) where the latter emotes the challenging role of an autistic. While the Baadshah impressed as an autistic in “My name is Khan, ‘the focus is now on Priyanka. With women-centric movies pronouncing “entertainment, entertainment and entertainment” to be the key for a movie, it is time for deglamed Priyanka to stand up to the expectations and leave an everlasting impression on the minds of the movie lovers. Her tryst as Susanna with seven husbands earned her accolades in ‘Saat Khoon Maaf,’ and she is expected to pull out the role of Jhimli with equal elan.
Priyanka as Jhilmil is kept on a low profile. Jhilmil is not to be traced out prominently in the trailers. Piggy Chops is not hogging the limelight in the couple of songs that are out. While the rumormongers are touting it as a discord between the film maker and the actress, others are terming it as a deliberate attempt on the part of Anurag Basu to keep the best for the last. With the taste of the movie buffs changing at the drop of a hat, the film-makers are trying out different recipes to satiate the taste buds of the audience.
Ranbir who is an inhibition-free actor is definitely the chief ingredient of Barfi who will definitely have a major role in deciding whether Basu’s Barfi is too tasty, could have been more sugary or is tasteless!! Let 14th September decide it!
